After some discussion remind your class that compare means to. The big idea of this lesson is that students can use their knowledge of place value to compare numbers and order them based upon their value. Then using the chart compare each place value pointing out that when we arrive at a place value in which one digit is greater that number is greater.
If they are the same then they can compare digits in the next place value.
Explain to your students that when comparing numbers they can start with the digit in the greatest place value first. Write the terms greater than less than and equal to on the whiteboard. Compare two three digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds tens and ones digits using and symbols to record the results of comparisons. Ask students how many hundreds are in both numbers on the board.
